You found a beautifully cured flower with a loud, vivid nose — or a piece of traditional hash with that unmistakable spicy-floral character. Six months later you open the container and… it smells like hay. What happened? Storage happened. Terpenes and trichomes are fragile, and how you keep a specimen determines whether its character survives. Here's the complete collector's guide to doing it right.
The four enemies of aroma
1. Oxygen
Terpenes oxidise. Every time air circulates around your material, the lightest and most distinctive aroma compounds — the citrus top notes, the fruity esters — are the first to degrade. Oxidation also slowly converts cannabinoids into their degradation products, changing the specimen's character over time.
2. Light
UV radiation is the single fastest destroyer of trichomes and terpenes. Direct sunlight can visibly bleach a flower in days and flatten its aroma just as quickly. Even indirect daylight does cumulative damage. This is why serious collectors store everything in darkness or in opaque/UV-filtering containers.
3. Heat
Terpenes are volatile by definition — warmth makes them evaporate. A jar kept above a radiator or in a warm cupboard will lose its top notes steadily even if it's airtight, because the compounds migrate out of the material and escape every time you open the lid. Cool and stable beats warm every time.
4. Wrong humidity
This one cuts both ways. Too dry, and flowers turn brittle: trichome heads snap off with every handling, and the aroma goes flat and hay-like. Too humid, and you risk the worst outcome of all — mould, which ruins a specimen permanently. The sweet spot for cannabis flowers is 55–62% relative humidity.
The right setup for flowers
- Airtight glass jars. Glass is inert — it doesn't absorb terpenes or leach odours the way plastic does. A quality jar with a proper seal is the foundation of everything.
- Humidity packs. Two-way humidity regulators (the 58% or 62% packs sold for this exact purpose) hold the jar's microclimate steady for months. For any flower you plan to keep long-term, they're the best few crowns you'll spend.
- Dark, cool location. A drawer or cabinet away from heat sources, ideally between 15–21 °C. No refrigerator — fridge humidity cycles cause condensation, and freezing makes trichomes shatter on contact.
- Right-sized containers. A nearly empty large jar holds a lot of oxygen. Match jar size to contents, or step down to smaller jars as a specimen is handled.
- Minimal handling. Every squeeze and every pour knocks trichomes off. Handle flowers by the stem where possible, and open the jar only when you need to.

Hash needs slightly different rules
Traditional pressed and sieved hash, like the pieces in our hash collection, is more forgiving than flower in some ways and fussier in others:
- No humidity packs needed. Hash isn't a dried plant material with a target moisture level — adding humidity can actually encourage mould on its surface. Airtight and dry is the rule.
- Wrap it first. Classic practice is to wrap hash in food-grade parchment/baking paper, then place it in an airtight glass container. The paper prevents the piece from sticking to surfaces and preserves its texture.
- Cool matters even more. Hash softens with warmth, which accelerates terpene loss and can change its consistency permanently. A consistently cool, dark cabinet is ideal; for very long-term keeping, some collectors use cold storage, but stable room-cool conditions are fine for months.
- Watch for surface changes. A light, dry "bloom" on aged hash can be harmless, but any fuzzy or damp spotting means moisture got in.
